The smallest churches in Rome

The Cappella della Madonna dell’Archetto, also known as the Little Chapel of the Madonna dell’Archetto, is indeed one of the smallest churches in Rome. It is a tiny chapel located in the historical center of Rome, near the Trevi Fountain.

The Cappella della Madonna dell’Archetto, constructed in the 19th century, serves as the home for an ancient image of the Madonna that was once venerated under a narrow passage arch at Palazzo Savorelli Muti Papazzurri, previously Palazzo Balestra. When the alley was closed off, Marquis Alessandro Savorelli Muti Papazzurri commissioned the construction of a small chapel to house the image, a work painted on majolica stone in 1690 by the Bolognese artist Domenico Maria Muratori.

The chapel, designed by architect Virginio Vespignani, is a rare example of neo-Renaissance architecture adorned with precious marbles and metals. It was inaugurated on May 31, 1851, and features paintings by Costantino Brumidi, who later frescoed the dome of the Capitol in Washington. The altar holds the image of the Madonna causa nostrae letitiae.

According to various testimonies documented in “Gli occhi di Maria” by Rino Cammilleri and Vittorio Messori, the Madonna’s image was reported to have been witnessed with turned eyes on July 9, 1796. A reproduction of this significant image can be found on Palazzo Castellani, situated on the corner between Piazza di Trevi and Via del Lavatore.

The chapel is known for its diminutive size and its location within a small building on Via di San Vincenzo. It’s a hidden gem and often overlooked by tourists due to its size. The interior of the chapel is modest, and it may not accommodate a large number of visitors at once.

The chapel of the Madonna dell’Archetto is located, in the Trevi district, in Via di San Marcello 41b. The official name of the church is Church of Santa Maria Causa Nostrae Laetitiae

While it may not be as famous as some of Rome’s larger churches, its small size and intimate atmosphere contribute to its charm, making it an interesting place for those exploring the less-known corners of the city. Keep in mind that details about specific locations can change, so it’s a good idea to check recent sources or local information for any updates.
