Botanical Garden of Rome

A journey through the colors and scents of the world, in Rome
You can travel around the world here, among the colors and scents of the incredible collections of the Botanical Garden of Rome

To get to know the world, and its natural wonders, we don’t need to get on the first plane to fly hundreds of miles away from home. No, just go to the capital of the BelPaese, and more precisely inside the Botanical Garden at the foot of the Janiculum to discover the great beauty of our planet.

Here, the ancient Japanese tradition of Hanami can be experienced firsthand, to admire the extraordinary cherry blossom in the Japanese Garden. But it is also possible to discover Copiapoa, which lives in the desert of Chile and Aghatis Robusta, native to distant Australian lands.

Those with nostalgia for Africa, on the other hand, will be able to inebriate their senses in front of the superb Proteaceae, a rare and superb collection from Cape Town. And whoever thinks that the world tour has ended here, is wrong. This botanical and living world map from Rome also takes us to the USA with the Liriodendron tulipifera and the great Sequoia America.

In short, from any point of view you look at it, the Botanical Garden of the Eternal City is a continuous discovery, not only for the incredible biodiversity it houses, but also for the provenance of all the collections. This wonderful local garden is one of the Museums of the Department of Environmental Biology of the Sapienza University of Rome.

It covers an area of about 12 hectares right in the urban heart of the city, between Via della Lungara and the Colle del Gianicolo, partly occupying the archaeological area Horti Getae, once formed by the baths of Septimius Severus.

The Garden houses one of the richest and most incredible collections of Bamboo, to which is added the wonderful Mediterranean Wood located in the hilly area, which is a precious testimony of the lush vegetation that once covered the Janiculum Hill. Then there are the palm trees, grown outdoors, which give an exotic and original look to the entire garden.

And then the Rose Garden and the splendid Garden of Aromas, a true experience that involves all the senses. Added to these are a collection of herbaceous ferns, a garden that houses the typical species of the Mediterranean scrub, medicinal and aquatic plants, the latter grown in the stream, in the pond and in some tanks.

A series of greenhouses, the Japanese Garden and monumental trees complete the itinerary. The world tour starts here: are you ready to go?
