Roseto Comunale di Roma – Aventine Hill

The Municipal Rose Garden of Rome, located on the slopes of the Aventine Hill at Via di Valle Murcia 6, is one of the city’s most charming gardens, renowned for its extraordinary collection of roses and panoramic view over the Circus Maximus and the Palatine Hill.

Opening Period and Hours (2025)

For 2025, the Rose Garden is open to the public from April 21 to June 15, daily from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM.
Admission is free, but reservations are required.
Due to roadwork, the main entrance is temporarily closed. Access is currently via Clivo dei Publicii 3.

What to See

The Rose Garden hosts over 1,200 varieties of roses from all over the world, including rare and curious species such as:

  • Rosa Chinensis Virdiflora, with green petals

  • Rosa Mutabilis, which changes color over several days

  • Rosa Foetida, known for its intense fragrance

The garden is divided into two main sections:

  • Upper Area: Home to the permanent collection of botanical, ancient, and modern roses.

  • Lower Area: Dedicated to the roses participating in the annual “Premio Roma” International Competition for New Varieties, held in May.

History & Curiosities

The area of the Rose Garden has ancient roots:

  • In the 3rd century BC, it was the site of a temple dedicated to the goddess Flora, honored with the “Floralia” celebrations in the nearby Circus Maximus.

  • In 1645, it became a Jewish cemetery, which was later moved to Verano in 1934.

  • In 1950, the area was transformed into the current Municipal Rose Garden.
    The pathways are arranged in the shape of a menorah in homage to its former sacred use.

The garden is located at Via di Valle Murcia 6, easily reachable by:

  • Metro Line B (stop: Circo Massimo)

  • Local bus lines serving the Circus Maximus area
